Francosphères (Francosphères)
Journal Descriptions
The bilingual journal Francosphères seeks to question the presence of French language and culture across frontiers and borders, as defined by ‒ but not limited to ‒ (post)colonial encounters and decolonial perspectives. To this extent, it is a journal of transcultural and intercultural French Studies ‒ about liminal spaces and transference rather than operating within the hierarchy of ‘French’ or ‘Francophone’ culture. The journal’s overall aim is to advance a dialogue about what it means to work in ‘French’ Studies in the 21st Century. Francosphères thus offers an opportunity to reflect critically on ‘concentrations’ of creative and counter-hegemonic endeavours in which the French language, culture, or an ‘idea’ of Frenchness have played a determining role, thereby contributing to the development of new critical paradigms for our arguably ‘post-national’ era. Papers on the following subjects are particularly welcomed, but these are by no means limitations: The abolition of ‘French’ literature? Decolonizing French Studies French as a transnational language Hybridity, plurality, and interculturalism The poetics and the politics of ‘Frenchness’ or ‘Francité’ Francophone postcolonial (counter-)memory Translingual writing in French The cultural circuits of French as a globalized language The multiplicity of ‘Francophonies’ and the fragmentation of French culture The ideologies of ‘Francophilia’ Francosphères was founded by Professor Andrew Hussey at the University of London Institute in Paris and was formally edited from the Institute of Languages, Cultures and Societies at the School of Advanced Studies. Now owned by Liverpool University Press, the journal continues its close association with the University of London, notably Queen Mary’s School of Languages, Linguistics and Film.
