Journal Descriptions

Ethology is one of the longest‑standing and most respected journals in the field of animal behaviour and behavioural biology. Established in 1937 as Zeitschrift für Tierpsychologie, it was among the first scientific periodicals dedicated to systematic and empirical studies of behaviour in animals under natural conditions — blending field observation with rigorous experimental approaches. In 1986 the journal adopted its current title and evolved into a leading international forum for the publication of original research, reviews, species profiles, methodological advances, and behavioural notes that reflect both Tinbergen’s four questions (mechanism, ontogeny, function, and phylogeny) and contemporary approaches to behavioural ecology and comparative psychology. Today Ethology publishes monthly, making it a high‑visibility venue for high‑quality studies of behaviour across vertebrates and invertebrates, including social behaviour, communication, learning, evolution, and neuroethological mechanisms. It is recognized for its broad behavioural biology coverage, rigorous peer review, and a tradition of methodological innovation — including contributions that address sampling biases in behaviour research. The journal serves researchers, graduate students, and professionals in animal behaviour, ecology, evolutionary biology, psychology, neurobiology, and related disciplines worldwide
