Ethnologie française (EF)
Journal Descriptions
This publication is one of the leading journals of European anthropology. While continuing to engage with the classic, founding subjects of the discipline, the journal addresses questions of global current affairs: migration, tourism, sports, humanitarian aid, and sexuality. Its anthropology draws as much on French concepts as on Anglo-Saxon ones. Founded in 1971 by Jean Cuisenier as part of the Centre d'ethnologie française, Ethnologie française was first and foremost a break with the folklorist approach that then dominated the analysis of social and cultural events in France and Europe in general. Since 2008, Ethnologie française has been part of the editorial division of the MSH - Mondes at the Université Paris Nanterre, and is now one of the leading general anthropology journals in the French language. Edited by Martine Segalen (2006-2017), then by Nicolas Adell (2017-2022) and Michèle Baussant (2022-), it maintains a particular, but not exclusive, focus on European societies, through the prism of ethnography and in dialogue with perspectives from history, sociology, political science, geography and literary studies. Ethnologie française has published three issues a year since 2020. The paper version is published and distributed by Presses Universitaires de France. Issues published since 2001 can be accessed online via the Cairn portal, with a 24-month moving barrier, and older issues can be consulted on the JSTOR platform. The journal is supported by Université Paris Nanterre, InSHS and the DPRPS (Ministère de la culture et de la communication - Direction Générale des Patrimoines).
