Estuarine, Coastal and Shelf Science (ECSS)
Journal Descriptions
Estuarine, Coastal and Shelf Science is a long‑established, peer‑reviewed multidisciplinary journal focused on the scientific study of aquatic environments from tidal estuaries and coastal zones to the outer continental shelf. It provides a unique forum for research that integrates physical, chemical, biological and geological perspectives on coastal and shelf seas, addressing key issues in marine and freshwater biology, oceanography, sedimentology, ecosystem dynamics and environmental change. The journal publishes original research papers, review articles and short communications that cover topics such as hydrodynamic modelling of estuarine and coastal systems, species distribution under changing environmental conditions, impacts of waste disposal and runoff, brackish water processes, sediment transport and geochemistry, ecosystem dynamics and resource exploitation. Emphasis is placed on studies that enhance understanding of coastal processes, ecological responses to natural and human‑induced stressors, and the functioning of transitional water ecosystems. With broad coverage that spans the disciplines of ocean sciences and marine environmental research, the journal serves scientists, engineers, environmental managers and policymakers concerned with coastal zone health, climate change impacts, biodiversity conservation and sustainable resource management. Its multidisciplinary scope mirrors the complexity of estuarine and shelf environments and encourages integrative approaches to contemporary marine science challenges.
