Environment and Security (ES)
Journal Descriptions
Environment and Security is an interdisciplinary, international, peer-reviewed academic journal that focuses on the intersections between environmental dynamics and security in its broadest sense. It publishes original research, theoretical contributions, and critical analyses that explore how environmental change — including climate variability, natural resource scarcity, biodiversity loss, ecosystem degradation, and related shifts — intersects with conflict, peacebuilding, human security, national and international security, migration, disaster risk, and governance. The journal addresses both traditional and non-traditional security concerns, encompassing violent and non-violent conflict, environmental diplomacy, societal resilience, and the role of natural resources in shaping political and social stability. It welcomes contributions that apply diverse methodological approaches (qualitative, quantitative, mixed methods) and theoretical frames from disciplines such as political science, international relations, peace and conflict studies, environmental studies, geography, anthropology, law, economics, and development studies. Through rigorous scholarship, Environment and Security serves as a platform for advancing academic debates and informing decision-makers, practitioners, and global dialogues on how environmental and security challenges are entangled in contexts ranging from climate-induced migration and resource competition to environmental peacebuilding and cooperative risk management. Its commitment to interdisciplinary perspectives also prioritizes under-represented voices and global South research in shaping the evolving theoretical and policy landscape.
