Journal Descriptions

Empirical Studies of the Arts is a long‑standing, peer‑reviewed interdisciplinary journal established in 1983 and published biannually by SAGE Publications for the International Association of Empirical Aesthetics (IAEA). It provides a dedicated scholarly venue for empirical research on aesthetic experiences, artistic creativity, and the psychological and social dimensions of engagement with the arts. The journal’s mission is to foster high‑quality research that advances theoretical understanding and empirical knowledge about how people create, perceive, evaluate, and respond to artistic forms across cultural and contextual settings. The journal publishes original research articles, theoretical contributions, literature reviews, and methodological papers that explore a variety of topics—including perceptual and cognitive mechanisms underlying aesthetic judgments, the role of personality and emotion in art appreciation, creativity and artistic practice, cultural influences on artistic experience, and behavioral studies of response to music, visual arts, dance, theater, and literature. By welcoming a range of methods and disciplinary perspectives, Empirical Studies of the Arts bridges gaps between arts and sciences, contributing critical insights for psychologists, sociologists, aesthetic theorists, and arts scholars alike. Its international editorial board and diverse contributor base reflect its commitment to expanding empirical aesthetics research globally.
