eGEMs is AcademyHealth’s peer-reviewed, open access journal created to accelerate research and quality improvement using electronic health data. Launched in 2013 by AcademyHealth's Electronic Data Methods (EDM) Forum, eGEMs has published more than 160 papers featuring cutting-edge work from leaders in the field and is a premier journal for approaches to redesigning the health system. eGEMs (Generating Evidence and Methods to improve patient outcomes) is AcademyHealth’s open access, peer-reviewed online journal dedicated to accelerating research and quality improvement using electronic health data. The journal first began publishing in 2013 as part of the mission of the EDM (Electronic Data Methods) Forum, a community supported by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) with the goal of advancing the national dialogue on the use of electronic health data for research and quality improvement. Since its launch, eGEMs has published over 180 papers with well over 150,000 downloads—all highlighting cutting-edge work from leaders in the field and sharing emerging approaches to redesigning the health system. As eGEMs’ publication numbers grew, all journal articles were indexed in Google Scholar, the Directory of Open Access Journals, EBSCOhost, and the National Library of Medicine’s PubMed Central. With the close of the AHRQ grant in 2016, eGEMs became AcademyHealth’s first in-house journal, and continues to publish methods, lessons, and research that contribute to the next generation of learning health systems.
