Journal Descriptions

The Eastern Africa Journal of Rural Development (EAJRD) was established in the late 1960s as a regional academic journal dedicated to advancing knowledge on rural development issues in Eastern Africa, with a strong emphasis on agricultural economics, planning, and rural social science research. Published under the auspices of the Eastern Africa Agricultural Economics Society and anchored within the Department of Agricultural Economics & Agribusiness at Makerere University, Uganda, the journal provided a platform for scholars, policymakers, and practitioners to disseminate research findings that addressed problems facing rural communities and agricultural systems in countries such as Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, and neighboring states. Throughout its run, the journal featured original research articles, analytical studies, policy discussions, and case reports on topics such as smallholder productivity, land use and tenure, extension services, agricultural marketing, rural income distribution, and socio‑economic dynamics of rural populations. Its publication cycle was annual, and it provided an important outlet for empirical and theoretical work on development strategies tailored to the needs of Eastern African rural societies. Although the journal is no longer actively publishing in recent years (last indexed issues are from the early 2000s), older volumes remain valuable for historical and policy research on rural development in the region.
