Journal Descriptions

The East and Central African Journal of Surgery (ECAJS) is one of the leading surgical journals in Africa, with roots tracing back to 1978 when it began as the official publication of the Association of Surgeons of East Africa (ASEA). It adopted its current title in 1995 and developed into a fully peer‑reviewed journal dedicated to advancing surgical science and clinical excellence across the region. Originally published biannually, it transitioned to a quarterly publication in 2020 to accommodate increased manuscript submissions and foster wider dissemination of surgical research. Published by the College of Surgeons of East, Central and Southern Africa (COSECSA), the ECAJS aims to facilitate the exchange of surgical ideas, evidence, and practice among clinicians, academics, and practitioners. The journal covers a broad spectrum of topics including clinical research, trauma and critical care, surgical innovations, systematic reviews, and global surgery perspectives, emphasizing relevance to the health challenges and surgical needs within the East and Central African context. Through open access and rigorous peer review, the journal supports evidence‑based decision‑making, clinical improvements, and professional growth among surgical communities regionally and globally.
