Early Science and Medicine (ESM) is a peer-reviewed international journal dedicated to the history of science, medicine and technology from Antiquity through to the end of the eighteenth century. The need to treat in a single journal all aspects of scientific, medical and technological activity and thought to the eighteenth century emerges from the comparably low degree of specialization and the high degree of disciplinary interdependence characterizing the period before the professionalization of these fields. We welcome articles prompted by current interests in the history of pre-modern science, medicine and technology that are characterised by an identification and discussion of a historical problem. The journal has so far focused mainly on the Western, Byzantine and Arabic traditions. The journal is however also open to considering scientific, medical and technological traditions across the globe before 1800, and it is particularly interested in emphasizing elements of interconnectedness across geographical regions and time periods. It encourages the diachronic study of these traditions from a wide variety of viewpoints, including commented text editions or studies of historical figures, scientific questions or practices. Early Science and Medicine contains an extended book review section. It also welcomes special issues and feature sections dedicated to emerging historiographic fields and methods of research. If you are thinking of submitting an article written in a language that is different from those chosen by previous contributors to this journal (English, French, German), please get in touch with the editors to discuss the best option for handling the process of review and publication.
