Journal Descriptions

DIY, Alternative Cultures and Society is an interdisciplinary academic journal published by SAGE Publications that provides a dedicated platform for research on DIY practices and alternative cultural phenomena in contemporary society. Launched in 2023, the journal addresses a rapidly expanding field of inquiry that intersects cultural sociology, anthropology, media studies, urban and rural studies, and related disciplines. It publishes high-quality original research articles, theoretical essays, and review studies that explore the cultural, social, economic, and political dimensions of do-it-yourself practices and alternative ways of cultural production and consumption. By bringing together scholarship from across the globe, the journal seeks to deepen understanding of how DIY and alternative cultures shape identities, communities, creative economies, and modes of social engagement in both local and transnational contexts. Its multidisciplinary approach encourages contributions that use diverse conceptual frameworks and methodologies, ranging from ethnography and discourse analysis to quantitative and mixed methods. The publication’s triannual schedule ensures a steady flow of current research that appeals to academics, advanced students, and practitioners interested in cultural innovation, grassroots creativity, and the social life of DIY practices worldwide.
