Journal Descriptions

Developmental Child Welfare is a relatively new but growing academic journal (first published in 2019) that fills a critical niche in child development and welfare research. Published quarterly by SAGE Publications, the journal serves as a dedicated platform for rigorous multidisciplinary research addressing how severe social adversity affects children and adolescents. Unlike many child development journals that focus exclusively on psychological theory or clinical outcomes, this journal foregrounds the intersection of developmental science with real‑world welfare contexts, including families struggling with maltreatment, foster and kinship care systems, and transitions between care and permanent arrangements. Scholars contributing to this journal examine not only developmental outcomes such as mental and physical health, learning, and social functioning but also systemic influences and policy environments that shape these outcomes. The journal aims to connect empirical evidence with broader questions about child health equity, systemic reform, and social justice, making it valuable to researchers, practitioners, and policymakers. Through original research, policy analyses, reviews, and debate pieces, Developmental Child Welfare contributes to evidence‑informed practice and reform efforts that can improve life courses for children exposed to adversity.
