Current Opinion in Environmental Sustainability (COES)
Journal Descriptions
Current Opinion in Environmental Sustainability is a high-impact, peer-reviewed review journal published by Elsevier that provides concise, expert-written syntheses of current research and emerging themes in environmental sustainability science. First launched in 2009, the journal appears bimonthly, producing six issues per year that combine invited review articles and thematic Special Issues covering major topics such as environmental change, sustainability governance, human-environment interactions, resilience and transformation in socio-ecological systems, and global sustainability challenges. Its mission is to help researchers, practitioners, policymakers and students stay up to date with rapidly evolving literature by offering high-value interpretation and critical assessments of recent developments — rather than original primary research. The editorial leadership, including Professors Timothy Dube and Hallie Eakin and Associate Professor Victor Galaz, draws on interdisciplinary expertise spanning natural and social sciences, sustainability policy, and systems analysis to ensure the content is both scientifically rigorous and broadly relevant. While most contributions are by invitation, the journal also publishes an annual “Open Issue” that accepts abstracts from a wider pool of contributors. The journal’s hybrid publishing model supports both subscription and open access options, maximizing accessibility and impact for its international audience.
