Critique (Critique)
Journal Descriptions
The magazine Critique, founded in 1946 by Georges Bataille and edited from 1962 to 1996 by Jean Piel, is today directed by Philippe Roger and an editorial board that includes Marc Augé, Françoise Balibar, Pierre Birnbaum, Antoine Compagnon, Danièle Cohn, Pedro Cordoba, Élie During, Yves Hersant and Alain de Libera. Critique is a "general review of French and foreign publications". Each year, it offers its readers nine issues, including three double issues. It intends to remain faithful to the mission set by Georges Bataille: "Critique will publish studies on books and literary works. Critique will publish studies on books and articles published in France and abroad. These studies go beyond the importance of simple reviews. Through them, Critique would like to give an overview, as incomplete as possible, of the various activities of the human mind in the fields of literary creation, philosophical research, historical, scientific, political and economic knowledge." Escaping both the urgency inherent in cultural journalism and the inevitable specialization of scholarly journals, Critique is an instrument of information and a space for reflection, more indispensable than ever. The studies it publishes seek to identify what's new and essential in the mass of publications. Scholarly and specialized subjects are treated in a way that is accessible to non-specialists.
