Journal Descriptions

Critical Sociology is a respected, peer-reviewed academic journal committed to advancing critical approaches to social science. First published in 1969 amid the intellectual ferment of the late 1960s, the journal grew out of radical critique within sociology and has since become a central forum for research that interrogates social structures and power relations. It publishes six issues per year, welcoming work that bridges theory and empirical inquiry while focusing on the deep dynamics of race, class, gender, capitalism, culture, and inequality. The journal is especially known for showcasing contributions from critical, Marxist, feminist, post-Marxist, and cultural perspectives that challenge orthodoxy and examine the political economy of contemporary societies. Articles in Critical Sociology often explore themes such as social stratification, state power, labour and labour movements, urbanisation, racial and ethnic relations, globalisation, education, and resistance movements, with an eye toward illuminating the mechanisms of domination and avenues for emancipation. Its interdisciplinary character makes it valuable not only to sociologists but also to political scientists, cultural theorists, anthropologists, and scholars of social movements. By foregrounding reflexive critique and transformative inquiry, Critical Sociology contributes to scholarly debates about the nature of social change and the possibilities for more equitable and democratic societies.
