Journal Descriptions

Critical Social Policy is a highly regarded, peer-reviewed academic journal that has shaped debates in social policy and welfare analysis for more than four decades. Founded in 1981, the journal provides an international platform for scholarship that goes beyond conventional policy analysis to examine how power, inequality, and social relations shape the formulation, implementation, and impacts of public policies. Published quarterly, the journal welcomes original empirical research, theoretical essays, critiques, and interdisciplinary work rooted in critical perspectives — including socialist, feminist, anti-racist, intersectional and radical frameworks. Contributors examine issues such as poverty and inequality, gendered and racialised welfare systems, neoliberal reforms, care and social reproduction, labour rights, health and housing policy, migration, education, and struggles for inclusion and justice around the world. Critical Social Policy is distinctive for its engagement with activist praxis and lived experience, particularly through sections like Living Activism which invites contributions from grassroots actors, advocates, and service users. By interrogating traditional assumptions and power structures in social policy, the journal advances both scholarly and public debates about how to create more equitable, responsive and democratic welfare systems. Researchers, policymakers, practitioners, and students use the journal as a key resource for understanding the political dimensions of social change and welfare.
