Journal Descriptions

Critical Research on Religion is an international, peer‑reviewed academic journal published by SAGE Publications that advances critical theoretical and empirical work on religion and related phenomena. Founded in 2013, the journal provides a platform for scholars across religious studies, sociology, anthropology, theology, philosophy, cultural studies, and related humanities and social sciences to examine religion through critical lenses such as critical theory, post‑structuralism, feminism, Marxism, post‑colonialism, ecocriticism, queer studies, and psychoanalysis. Its mission is to deepen understanding of how religious beliefs, practices, and institutions shape and are shaped by social power, political conflicts, and cultural struggles, as well as how they contribute to both domination and social transformation. The journal publishes theoretical articles, empirical studies, review essays, book reviews, thematic special issues, symposia, and interviews, encouraging diverse methodologies including qualitative, quantitative, archival, and historical approaches. By fostering rigorous critical scholarship, Critical Research on Religion challenges taken‑for‑granted assumptions about religion, illuminates the complexity of religious dynamics in global contexts, and connects religious inquiry to issues of inequality, identity, conflict, and social change. Its readership includes academics, graduate students, and thinkers interested in interdisciplinary and critical approaches to religion in society.
