Journal Descriptions

Contributions to Indian Sociology is one of the most respected and long‑standing sociology journals in South Asia, published tri‑annually by SAGE Publishing in association with the Institute of Economic Growth (Delhi, India). Founded in 1957 by renowned scholars Louis Dumont and David Francis Pocock, and later revitalised in 1967 under Triloki Nath Madan, the journal has played a central role in fostering scholarship on India’s social world for more than six decades. Its core mission is to encourage theoretical innovation and empirical rigor in the study of society in India and the South Asian region. The journal publishes original research articles, insightful reviews, thoughtful book reviews and critical commentaries that engage with major sociological themes such as caste and class dynamics, religion and secularism, gender relations, labor and economy, identity formation, political sociology, urban and rural transformations, and globalization. With a commitment to linking theory and empirical evidence, Contributions to Indian Sociology nurtures diverse methodological approaches and interdisciplinary perspectives. Its editorial standards and international visibility — backed by indexing in major databases such as Scopus and the Social Sciences Citation Index — make it a key publication for scholars interested in South Asian social processes and comparative social theory. The journal not only shapes academic discourse but also informs broader understandings of social change in one of the world’s most dynamic regions.
