Journal Descriptions

Contemporary Drug Problems is a long-standing peer-reviewed academic journal dedicated to advancing critical research on the social dimensions of alcohol and other psychoactive substance use and related issues. Published quarterly by SAGE Publications, the journal offers a multidisciplinary platform for scholars and practitioners to explore drug use, drug effects, and drug-related problems within broader social, cultural, historical, political and economic contexts. Unlike biomedical journals focused mainly on clinical or pharmacological aspects, Contemporary Drug Problems foregrounds sociological, anthropological, policy, legal and historical approaches to understanding how societies construct and respond to substance use. It welcomes innovative qualitative studies, critical theoretical work, policy analyses and interdisciplinary research that illuminate how drugs, drug users and drug-related phenomena are shaped by culture, inequality, law, public health frameworks and social structures. The journal serves as a key resource for researchers in social sciences, public health, welfare and criminal justice, as well as policy makers and community practitioners interested in harm reduction, social justice, drug policy reform, and the lived experience of people who use drugs. By fostering critical dialogue and diverse methodologies, Contemporary Drug Problems contributes to richer, more contextualised understandings of complex drug issues in contemporary societies.
