Journal Descriptions

Computers in Human Services was a peer-reviewed academic journal that focused on the application of computer technology in human service fields. Established in 1985, it explored how information and communication technologies could be used in areas such as social work, mental health services, rehabilitation, addiction treatment, education, and community support systems. The journal published research articles, case studies, and applied reports examining the design, implementation, and evaluation of computer-based systems in human services. Key topics included early information systems for social service agencies, computer-assisted counseling tools, data management in welfare organizations, telehealth applications, and technology-assisted decision-making in social care. A major contribution of the journal was its role in documenting the early integration of digital technologies into social and health services during the 1980s and 1990s. It provided a scholarly platform for practitioners and researchers to evaluate how computing tools could improve service delivery, efficiency, and client outcomes in human-centered professions. In 1999, the journal was renamed and continued as the Journal of Technology in Human Services, reflecting a broader and more modern focus on digital transformation in human services. Its legacy continues in contemporary research on e-social work, digital mental health services, and ICT-based human service delivery systems.
