Journal Descriptions

Computers in Entertainment (CiE) was an influential **online publication by the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) that operated from 2003 until 2018 as a hybrid academic journal and industry magazine. Carrying the ISSN 1544‑3574, CiE was published quarterly, offering a unique forum where peer‑reviewed research articles and editorial content coexisted with industry news, interviews, creative reviews, and multimedia features. Under the leadership of longstanding Editor‑in‑Chief Newton Lee, the magazine explored how computing technologies shape and are shaped by entertainment media, including video games, digital art, cinema, television, music, and interactive storytelling. In addition to deep technical analyses, the publication included video interviews, commentaries, product critiques, and community reports, making it relevant to both academic researchers and entertainment technology professionals. CiE’s interdisciplinary approach allowed it to cover emerging themes such as the integration of artificial intelligence in games, immersive media design, user experience in interactive environments, and social impacts of entertainment technologies. The journal was indexed in major abstracting services, enhancing its visibility across computer science and media studies research. Though it ceased publication in late 2018, CiE’s archives — including nearly 50 volumes of content — remain accessible through the ACM Digital Library, preserving a rich record of how computing and entertainment evolved in the early 21st century.
