Journal Descriptions
Collections: A Journal for Museum and Archives Professionals is a peer‑reviewed multidisciplinary journal published by SAGE Publications that explores the theory and practice of collections and collection care within museums, archives, special collections, libraries, and other cultural heritage institutions. It was first launched in 2004 to provide a dedicated forum for professionals and scholars to share research, case studies, policy analysis, and critical perspectives on the full lifecycle of collections — from acquisition and documentation to preservation, interpretation, and access. The journal covers a wide range of topics relevant to collections practice: handling and preservation of materials across formats; documentation standards; ethical and legal issues; digital curation and metadata; decolonizing and inclusive collecting practices; interpretation and public engagement; provenance research; and the role of collections in broader societal contexts. Its audience includes archivists, curators, collections managers, registrars, librarians, heritage professionals, researchers, and educators. Each issue features research articles and professional viewpoints that integrate theoretical insight with practical experience, strengthening the evidence base for effective collection care and policy development. Through its international editorial board and contributions from practitioners worldwide, Collections fosters dialogue across disciplines and supports evolving best practices in the stewardship of cultural and scientific heritage collections.
