Journal Descriptions

Coastal Studies & Society is a peer‑reviewed, interdisciplinary scholarly journal published by SAGE Publications Ltd. that provides a dedicated forum for research on the dynamic interactions between coastal environments and human societies. The journal was launched in 2022 to address a gap in academic inquiry that treats coastal zones not just as physical landscapes but as hybrid socio‑ecological spaces shaped by cultural, economic, ecological, political and historical forces. The scope of the journal spans a wide array of topics including coastal community life, built environments and urban planning in littoral towns, fisheries and livelihoods, traditional ecological knowledge, identity and culture in coastal settings, governance and policy, sustainability and resilience to climate change, migration and inequality, and human impacts on coastal ecologies. It embraces contributions from the humanities, social sciences, planning, environmental studies, geography, and related fields, encouraging innovative and comparative approaches. By fostering cross‑disciplinary dialogue and promoting new conceptual frameworks, Coastal Studies & Society seeks to deepen scholarly understanding of how coasts are experienced, contested, managed, and transformed in an era of rapid environmental change and socio‑economic globalization.
