Journal Descriptions

Birth Defects: Original Article Series was a highly respected peer reviewed medical publication dedicated to the scientific study of congenital abnormalities and developmental disorders. Established in 1965 by the National Foundation, later known as the March of Dimes Birth Defects Foundation, the series became one of the leading international platforms for research in teratology and medical genetics. The journal focused on the causes, diagnosis, prevention, and clinical management of birth defects and developmental abnormalities affecting infants and children. The publication included original research papers, conference proceedings, clinical investigations, epidemiological studies, and experimental research related to embryology, prenatal development, genetics, pediatrics, and reproductive toxicology. Many issues were devoted to specialized themes emerging from scientific symposia and international conferences on congenital disorders and developmental medicine. The journal played an important role in advancing understanding of genetic disorders, environmental teratogens, prenatal diagnosis, and preventive maternal healthcare. It was indexed in MEDLINE and other important biomedical databases, reflecting its significance in medical and developmental research. The series ceased publication in 1996 and later evolved into modern journals under the Birth Defects Research family published by Wiley.
