Journal Descriptions

BioScope: South Asian Screen Studies is a biannual, blind peer-reviewed journal published by SAGE Publications (India) Pvt. Ltd. in association with the Sarai Programme, Centre for the Study of Developing Societies (CSDS), India, and the India Media Centre at the University of Westminster, UK. Since its launch in 2010, the journal has carved a niche in the field of communication, cultural, and media studies by providing a dedicated platform for cutting-edge research on screen cultures and media practices in South Asia. It embraces a wide historical range — from precinematic visual technologies to contemporary screen forms shaped by digital and networked cultures — and foregrounds both theoretical insights and empirical investigation. The journal’s scope reflects an interdisciplinary ethos, welcoming contributions from film studies, media anthropology, visual culture, cultural history, ethnography, and technology studies. Contributors analyze how screens operate across social spaces — from urban cinemas and grassroots media networks to online forums and global media flows — and how these practices interact with issues of identity, politics, aesthetics, and regulation. The editorial commitment to archival research, fieldwork, and innovative methodologies encourages scholars to engage deeply with both textual and material dimensions of media. Over its years of publication, BioScope has become a key reference point for scholars of South Asian and global media cultures, fostering research that challenges, expands, and enriches conventional narratives of screen studies.
