Journal Descriptions

Biorheology is a long-standing and internationally respected scientific journal that has been publishing influential research since its establishment in 1962. Its central focus is the study of rheological properties — how biological materials and systems deform, flow, and respond to mechanical forces — which is fundamental to understanding physiological function and disease mechanisms. Over decades, the journal has evolved to include a broad interdisciplinary scope, welcoming contributions from biophysics, biomechanics, hemorheology, cellular mechanobiology, and biomedical engineering. Researchers publish original theoretical and experimental studies that investigate rheological phenomena from molecular and cellular scales to complex organs and clinical systems, including investigations of blood flow, soft tissue mechanics, and biomaterial interactions. The research disseminated in Biorheology has practical relevance in areas such as cardiovascular health, tissue engineering, prosthetics, diagnostics, and therapeutic device design, bridging fundamental science with biomedical applications. Published quarterly, the journal serves a global scientific community by advancing both theoretical understanding and applied research, promoting interdisciplinary dialogue and innovation. Today it is published under the SAGE Publications umbrella following a transition from its historical publisher, IOS Press.
