Biologically Inspired Cognitive Architectures (BICA)
Journal Descriptions
Biologically Inspired Cognitive Architectures was an international scientific journal dedicated to research investigating how cognitive architectures can be derived from or inspired by biological systems. Published by Elsevier, the journal provided a forum for interdisciplinary studies uniting perspectives from artificial intelligence, cognitive neuroscience, psychology, neural computation and related fields. Its scope included theoretical and empirical research into cognitive frameworks that emulate natural intelligence, neural mechanisms, learning and adaptation, hierarchical representations of knowledge, perception and action, decision‑making, memory structures, and biologically plausible computational models. The journal aimed to bridge gaps between biological insights and computational design, encouraging research that not only deepened understanding of cognition in living systems but also translated those principles into computational systems capable of human‑like learning and reasoning. Although the journal’s active publication run (2012‑2018) has ended, archived volumes remain accessible, reflecting contributions by researchers exploring how insights from biology can inform the structure, organization and dynamics of cognitive architectures implemented in artificial systems. Its interdisciplinary focus made it relevant for academics and practitioners in AI research, cognitive science, neuroscience, robotics and computational modelling.
