Biochimica et Biophysica Acta (BBA) - Reviews on Biomembranes (BBA-RB)
Journal Descriptions
Biochimica et Biophysica Acta (BBA) – Reviews on Biomembranes was a dedicated review journal section established by Elsevier in 1972, at a time when the larger Biochimica et Biophysica Acta journal series branched into specialized research and review components to cover emerging interdisciplinary areas in biochemistry and biophysics. This title focused on critical, authoritative review articles that synthesized and evaluated contemporary research on biological membranes — their structure, lipid composition, fluidity, membrane‑protein interactions, model membranes, transport processes, and functional roles in cell biology and physiology. Instead of original research papers, its issues compiled expert reviews that helped researchers keep abreast of developments and unresolved questions in membrane science. Over the three decades of publication, the journal provided comprehensive overviews of membrane biochemistry research, from early molecular characterizations to more integrative concepts in membrane dynamics. Around 2002, the Reviews on Biomembranes title was integrated into the broader BBA – Biomembranes section — reflecting a shift toward consolidating membrane research under a single topical research journal while maintaining review content within that framework. As a result, contemporary investigations and integrated reviews on membrane topics now appear under BBA – Biomembranes rather than as a separate review journal.
