Journal Descriptions
Belonging is a scholarly academic journal committed to advancing research and theory on the nature, dynamics and impacts of belonging in human life and society. Published by SAGE Publications, the journal explores belonging as a core human experience — one that is shaped by social structures, cultural identities, interpersonal relations, institutions and individual psychological processes. The editorial focus encompasses a broad spectrum of methodologies and disciplinary lenses, including psychology, sociology, education, cultural studies, organisational behaviour, health sciences, community development and intersectional social analysis. By bringing together diverse approaches that interrogate belonging as a concept and empirical phenomenon, the journal fosters critical dialogue on how belonging influences well-being, social cohesion, identity formation, inclusion/exclusion, group dynamics, equity and participation across global contexts. The journal values research that not only describes belonging but also explains mechanisms, patterns and outcomes that matter for theoretical advancement and real-world applications. Submissions include original empirical studies, rigorous systematic reviews, integrative theoretical work, conceptual discussions and context-based case analyses. Belonging aims to serve as a platform for interdisciplinary scholarship that informs academic research, educational practice, organisational strategies and policy interventions related to social connectedness, community engagement and human flourishing.
