Australian Midwifery (AM)
Journal Descriptions
Australian midwifery was a professional, peer-reviewed journal published by the Australian College of Midwives (ACM). With print ISSN 1448-8272 and online ISSN 1839-3365, it featured quarterly issues focusing on midwifery practice, childbirth, labour, obstetric care and professional midwifery issues relevant to the Australian context. Its content included clinical research, practice discussions, evidence-informed commentary and professional development for licensed practising midwives across Australia and internationally. The journal appeared in library records from at least 2003 through to 2005 before evolving into Women and Birth, also published by the ACM and now hosted by Elsevier. Women and Birth continues the midwifery scholarship tradition with a broader international scope, covering prenatal care, maternal health outcomes, and postpartum care. As a specialised midwifery journal, its editorial board and reviewers ensure academic quality through double-blind peer review, supporting practitioners, educators and researchers. While Australian midwifery itself no longer publishes new issues, its successor remains a key outlet for midwifery science and practice in Australia, representing important developments in maternity care research, policy and clinical guidelines.
