Journal Descriptions

The Australian College of Midwives Incorporated Journal was the official professional journal of the Australian College of Midwives Incorporated (ACMI), serving as a platform for research, professional commentary, clinical updates, education, policy discussion, and midwifery practice issues relevant to midwives in Australia. First appearing in 1988, the journal reflected the growing professionalism of midwifery in Australia and provided a forum for midwives to publish original articles, case reports, reviews and opinion pieces that informed both clinical practice and health policy in maternity care. It covered topics such as maternal and newborn health, labour and birth care, midwifery education and professional standards, community midwifery practice, evidence-based care, and interdisciplinary collaboration. The quarterly publication played a significant role in documenting the development and challenges of midwifery as a profession during the 1990s, with contributions from clinicians, educators and policy advocates working across healthcare settings. After 2000, the journal title and format evolved — subsequently becoming the Australian Journal of Midwifery and later Australian Midwifery, eventually contributing to what is now the internationally indexed journal Women and Birth. Although the original title is no longer active, its legacy remains significant in the history of midwifery scholarship in Australia.
