Assessing Writing (AW)
Journal Descriptions
Assessing Writing is a leading quarterly, peer‑reviewed academic journal dedicated to the theory, practice, and research of writing assessment. Established in 1994, it addresses issues in the assessment of writing across educational levels — from classroom assignments to large‑scale language tests — and covers topics such as test development, scoring rubrics, validity, reliability, alternative assessment methods, and the role of technology in assessment. Published by Elsevier, the journal appears four times a year and accepts original research articles, book reviews, conference reports, and scholarly dialogue concerning all facets of written language evaluation. The editorial leadership is shared by Martin East of the University of Auckland and David Slomp of the University of Lethbridge, who guide the rigorous peer review process. Assessing Writing serves researchers, educators, policy makers, and assessment specialists interested in high‑quality empirical and theoretical work on writing evaluation and contributes to ongoing discussion about effective, fair, and innovative assessment practices in language education and beyond.
