Archiv für Protistenkunde (AFP)
Journal Descriptions
Archiv für Protistenkunde was a pioneering scientific journal dedicated to protistology — the study of Protista, a paraphyletic assemblage of mostly unicellular eukaryotes such as protozoa, algae and other micro‑organisms. Founded in 1902 in Jena, Germany by Fritz Schaudinn, the journal provided one of the principal international forums for descriptive, experimental and systematic research on protists for much of the 20th century. It published articles in multiple languages (German, English, French) on morphology, ultrastructure, life cycles, physiology, ecology, taxonomy and pathogenesis of protists and related organisms. Research in the journal helped shape early understanding of cell biology and evolution in microorganisms, bridging zoology and microbiology at a time when protists were central to studies of basic biological processes. In its later decades, Archiv für Protistenkunde featured original articles, review notes, and taxonomic monographs by leading protozoologists. The journal’s rich legacy was carried forward in 1998, when it was renamed Protist, an English‑language international journal that continues to publish high‑quality research on protist biology, covering molecular, cellular, evolutionary and ecological aspects of these organisms. Many classic taxonomic descriptions and foundational studies in protistology appear in volumes of Archiv für Protistenkunde.
