Applied and Environmental Microbiology (AEM)
Journal Descriptions
Applied and Environmental Microbiology is one of the flagship journals of the American Society for Microbiology (ASM) and has been publishing continuously since 1953, originally under the name Applied Microbiology before adopting its current title in 1975. It is issued on a biweekly basis, producing approximately 24 issues per year. The journal’s primary mission is to disseminate high‑quality, peer‑reviewed research that advances both fundamental and applied aspects of microbiology in environmental and practical settings, bringing together diverse studies from microbial ecology, environmental biotechnology, microbial physiology, and molecular microbiology. As an applied journal, AEM prioritizes research that addresses how microorganisms interact with environmental matrices, influence biogeochemical cycles, contribute to biodegradation and bioremediation, and play roles in industrial and agricultural systems. It also embraces work on genetic and biochemical processes that have direct relevance to microbial function outside the lab. Experimental findings in the journal often have implications for fields such as environmental sustainability, waste treatment, soil and water health, and public safety. While recent content is often available through subscription, many articles become freely accessible six months after publication under ASM’s delayed open‑access policy. Over its long history, AEM has been recognized as one of the prominent journals in microbiology, reflecting its enduring influence and the global relevance of its published research.
