Annales Aequatoria (AA)
Journal Descriptions
Annales Aequatoria is an international scholarly journal devoted to research on the languages, cultures, and societies of Central Africa, particularly the Congo region. The journal was originally founded in 1937 under the title Aequatoria and served as a platform for academic discussions on African linguistics, anthropology, history, and cultural studies. After a period of suspension in 1962, the journal was revived in 1980 with the new title Annales Aequatoria and continued publication until 2009. It was issued annually and produced by the Centre Aequatoria in Bamanya, near Mbandaka in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The journal publishes peer reviewed research articles, linguistic analyses, ethnographic studies, and historical documentation related to Central African societies. Many contributions focus on Bantu languages, indigenous literature, oral traditions, colonial and postcolonial history, and cultural anthropology. Articles are typically written in English, French, or German to reach an international scholarly audience. Over the decades, Annales Aequatoria became an important academic resource for researchers studying African linguistics and the social sciences of the Congo Basin. The journal also contributed to preserving linguistic documentation and ethnographic records of local communities, making it a valuable reference source for historians, anthropologists, and linguists working in African studies.
