Journal Descriptions

Alternative Law Journal is an influential, scholarly legal periodical that has been published continuously since 1974, originally under the name Legal Service Bulletin before adopting its current title in 1992. As a quarterly, peer‑reviewed journal, it provides a forum for critical analysis, law reform debates, and scholarly commentary on legal, social justice, and human rights issues both within Australia and in comparative contexts. The journal’s scope is broad, encompassing policy critique, legal practice innovations, community legal education, access to justice, and the societal implications of legal systems and doctrines. It publishes a mix of original research articles, brief analytical pieces, reflective essays, opinion columns, and reviews that not only engage with traditional areas of law but also address emerging topics such as Indigenous rights, environmental justice, gender and law, welfare systems, immigration and refugee law, equality and anti‑discrimination law, and freedom of information. With contributions from academics, legal practitioners, policymakers, and community advocates, Alternative Law Journal is committed to advancing critical perspectives that challenge established norms, highlight injustices, and inform constructive legal reforms. Its long history and close link with the Legal Service Bulletin Co‑operative underscore its ongoing relevance to both legal scholarship and real‑world law reform conversations.
