Journal Descriptions

The ALGOL Bulletin was an influential technical periodical that chronicled development, discussion, and collaboration around the ALGOL programming languages, particularly ALGOL 60 and ALGOL 68. First published in March 1959 following a meeting of international computing center representatives, the Bulletin was initially edited by Peter Naur and served as an informal but critical communication channel for early high‑level language designers and researchers. As computational language research matured and the IFIP Working Group 2.1 took responsibility for ALGOL language maintenance and standardization, the Bulletin continued under WG 2.1’s auspices, published in English with ISSN 0084‑6198. The Bulletin’s issues were produced at irregular intervals, often approximately three times per year, reflecting the dynamic engagement of the ALGOL community rather than rigid publication schedules. Over nearly three decades, it offered a forum for debate and proposal circulation, including syntax clarifications, implementation notes, committee reports, and extensive community correspondence. Its contributions often prefigured formal language reports and conference discussions, documenting the evolution of programming language theory. The final issue appeared in August 1988, marking the end of a uniquely collaborative printed forum that prefigured modern online professional networks.
