African Studies Monographs (ASM)
Journal Descriptions
The African Study Monographs (ASM) is a well‑established, peer‑reviewed academic journal and monograph series dedicated to African studies in all its disciplinary breadth. Since its inception in 1981, ASM has been published by the Center for African Area Studies, Kyoto University (Japan) and has gained an international reputation for promoting scholarly work on African societies, cultures, histories, and contemporary issues. The journal publishes original research articles, review essays, theoretical analyses, and thematic special issues that span a wide range of fields including anthropology, history, sociology, political science, economics, environmental studies, linguistics, art and culture, and interdisciplinary topics related to African contexts. Over time, ASM has adapted its publication format — earlier volumes were released more frequently (quarterly), while recent issues (from around 2021) are compiled as annual volumes distributed both in print and online. ASM maintains rigorous peer review to ensure academic quality, and its open‑access policy supports broad dissemination of research worldwide. It serves as a crucial resource for scholars, researchers, and students interested in in‑depth African scholarship and cross‑disciplinary academic engagement, with a long history of supporting early‑career researchers and geographically diverse contributions.
