Journal Descriptions

Affilia: Feminist Inquiry in Social Work is a leading international journal that brings critical feminist perspectives to the study and practice of social work. Launched in 1986, the journal fills a unique niche by centering scholarship that examines gender, power, and intersectional oppression within social welfare systems and broader social contexts. Its quarterly issues present a rich mix of empirical studies, conceptual explorations, and critical essays that engage deeply with feminist theories, methodologies, and praxis, offering insights into how social work can address inequities related to gender, race, class, age, ability, and sexuality. The journal encourages contributions that challenge mainstream assumptions and expand understandings of social work’s role in promoting justice and liberation. Affilia also includes book reviews and creative pieces that reflect diverse voices and experiences from global research and practice communities. Through its intersectional and interdisciplinary orientation, the journal advances knowledge that is both academically rigorous and socially relevant — influencing policy, empowering practitioners, and shaping the education of future social workers. By foregrounding marginalized perspectives and fostering critical dialogue, Affilia contributes to transforming theory and practice in ways that enhance equity, dignity, and collective well‑being.
