Journal Descriptions

Acta Anatomica was a peer-reviewed international scientific journal dedicated to the fields of anatomy, histology, and morphological sciences. Established in 1945 and published by S. Karger AG in Basel, Switzerland, it served as an important platform for anatomical and biomedical research in Europe and globally. The journal published original research articles, experimental studies, reviews, and methodological papers focusing on the structure and organization of cells, tissues, and organs in humans and animals. Over the decades, Acta Anatomica contributed significantly to advances in microscopic anatomy, developmental biology, and experimental morphology. It provided a forum for researchers studying cellular organization, tissue differentiation, and structural biology, supporting both clinical and basic biomedical sciences. The journal was published bimonthly in later years and maintained a strong academic reputation in anatomical research communities. In 1999, Acta Anatomica was renamed and continued as Cells Tissues Organs, reflecting the evolving scope of modern morphological sciences and interdisciplinary biological research. Although the original title is no longer in use, its archival content remains highly valuable for historical and scientific reference in anatomy and cell biology. The journal played a key role in shaping 20th-century anatomical science and continues its legacy through its successor publication.
