Journal Descriptions

ACM SIGPLAN OOPS Messenger was the quarterly newsletter published by the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) under its Special Interest Group on Programming Languages (SIGPLAN), dedicated to object‑oriented programming and related technologies. Launched in August 1990, this publication provided a forum for disseminating ideas, experiences, research reports, and discussion on object‑oriented design, languages, and systems at a time when object‑oriented concepts were emerging rapidly in software engineering and language research. Issues typically included technical articles, discussions of object‑oriented methodologies, reports on workshops or SIGPLAN events, coverage of tool support and implementation techniques, and community news that bridged both academic and practical perspectives on object‑oriented computing. The OOPS Messenger complemented SIGPLAN’s other newsletters by offering a more specialized focus on object‑oriented programming topics, such as object semantics, real‑time systems, concurrency, and language features relevant to object‑oriented design. Over the course of its seven‑volume run (1990–1996), it documented key developments during a formative era of object‑oriented research — preceding many modern OOP frameworks and languages that followed in mainstream computing. While the newsletter is now discontinued, its archived articles (indexed under the ACM Digital Library) remain a historical record of object‑oriented research dialogue and community engagement within ACM SIGPLAN’s programming languages community.
