Journal Descriptions

ACM SIGPLAN Lisp Pointers was the official Special Interest Publication of the ACM Special Interest Group on Programming Languages (SIGPLAN) dedicated to the Lisp programming language and related functional topics. Launched in 1987, Lisp Pointers served a niche but passionate community of Lisp developers, researchers, and enthusiasts at a time when Lisp was widely used in artificial intelligence, symbolic computation, and language research. Unlike formal peer‑reviewed journals, it was a newsletter‑style publication that offered technical articles, implementation insights, language design discussions, performance and optimization notes, conference and workshop reports, and care‑of‑community news reflecting the evolving Lisp ecosystem. Early volumes regularly published six issues per year, but as submissions varied and community activity shifted, the publication transitioned to a triannual schedule in the early 1990s, balancing community interest with content availability. Lisp Pointers documented important aspects of Lisp language development and research, including new dialect features, compiler techniques, functional programming paradigms, and practical Lisp usage across academic and industrial settings. Edited by practitioners deeply involved in the Lisp community, it remains a valuable historical record of Lisp’s influence during the late 1980s and 1990s. The newsletter’s run concluded with its last issues in 1995, as programming language research and publishing models continued to evolve within ACM.
