ACM SIGPLAN Fortran Forum (SFF)
Journal Descriptions
ACM SIGPLAN Fortran Forum was a special interest newsletter published by the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) on behalf of its SIGPLAN community, dedicated to ongoing discussion and dissemination of knowledge related to the Fortran programming language. First launched in July 1982 as ForTec Forum, the publication became Fortran Forum in December 1984, reflecting its focus on the evolving needs of Fortran programmers and researchers. Over its multi‑decade history, the newsletter appeared three times a year, addressing topics such as language standardization efforts, implementations and compilers, optimization techniques, language use in scientific and engineering applications, and community developments in the broader Fortran ecosystem. With contributions from compiler developers, academic researchers, and user community members, Fortran Forum served as a technical forum distinct from mainstream journals, offering in‑depth articles, discussions, and reports that bridged research and practical programming concerns. While not a peer‑reviewed journal, it functioned as a community flagship publication, preserving historical perspectives on Fortran’s evolution, from Fortran 77 through modern Fortran standards. Although regular issues appear to have ceased around 2020, its archive remains an important resource for understanding the language’s technical history and impact.
