Journal Descriptions

SIGPC Notes was a specialized publication produced by the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) on behalf of the Special Interest Group on Personal Computing (SIGPC) in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Established around 1978, this SIG publication emerged during the formative period of personal computing, when personal computers were transitioning from hobbyist curiosities to mainstream tools for business, education, and research. Rather than functioning as a formal peer‑reviewed journal, SIGPC Notes provided a forum for informal commentary, technical explorations, position papers, and community discourse on topics of immediate relevance to personal computing practitioners and researchers. Articles addressed challenges and innovations in hardware, software, personal information processing, decision support tools, and early user‑centric computing trends. Because this publication predated the widespread adoption of modern computing periodicals and digital communication, it served as a valuable venue for disseminating early insights from pioneers of personal computing — including technical analysis, reflections on the societal impact of PCs, and explorations of future directions in personal computing research. Although the publication had a limited run (circa 1978–1983) and is no longer active, its archived issues are preserved in digital repositories such as the ACM Digital Library and serve as historical documents of early personal computing thought and SIG activity.
