ACM SIGOA Newsletter (SN)
Journal Descriptions
The ACM SIGOA Newsletter was a quarterly periodical published by the Association for Computing Machinery for the Special Interest Group on Office Automation (SIGOA) beginning in 1980. It served as an early communication channel for professionals and researchers in the emerging field of office automation and computer‑assisted information processing, a discipline concerned with integrating computing technologies into organizational work practices prior to the widespread use of personal computers and modern collaborative tools. The newsletter helped connect members of ACM’s SIGOA community by sharing technical reports, software and systems news, event notifications, conference announcements, expert commentary, and summaries of innovations in office information systems. Content often focused on adapting computing resources for tasks such as document processing, scheduling, office workflows, group communication systems, and cooperative work technologies — areas that now form part of the broader fields of computer‑supported cooperative work (CSCW) and human‑computer interaction (HCI). As a quarterly publication with both print and online formats, it supported an academic and practitioner community during the early 1980s, laying groundwork for later ACM activities in organizational computing. After 1986, SIGOA’s publications were subsumed into the SIGOIS Bulletin as organizational focus evolved within ACM.
