Journal Descriptions

The ACM SIGNUM Newsletter was the official quarterly newsletter of ACM’s Special Interest Group on Numerical Mathematics (SIGNUM). First published in June 1966, it provided an important outlet for the numerical analysis and scientific computing community at a time when digital communication was limited and ACM membership publications were a primary way to disseminate technical information. The newsletter covered a wide range of topics in numerical methods and algorithm development, including short research notes, problem and solution discussions, software tool updates, computational results, conference reports, and community announcements. Unlike peer‑reviewed journals, SIGNUM offered a rapid, community‑oriented platform where both established researchers and practitioners could share insights on emerging trends and practical issues in algorithmic and numerical computing. Over more than three decades, many influential numerical mathematicians contributed to SIGNUM, and its issues often documented the evolution of numerical software libraries, standards, and best practices. Because it was published before the rise of modern electronic mailing lists and web archives, SIGNUM issues are now valuable historical records of the development of computational science and ACM’s SIG community activities throughout the late 20th century. The newsletter was discontinued in 1998, as digital communication channels and internet‑based forums became common.
