ACM SIGMETRICS Performance Evaluation Review (SPER)
Journal Descriptions
ACM SIGMETRICS Performance Evaluation Review (PER) is the quarterly publication of the Association for Computing Machinery’s Special Interest Group on Measurement and Evaluation (SIGMETRICS), first appearing in 1972 and continuing in regular issues up to the present. PER serves as both a newsletter and informal journal for the SIGMETRICS community, distributed to SIGMETRICS members and archived in the ACM Digital Library. Its primary goal is to facilitate communication and knowledge sharing among researchers, educators, and professionals interested in performance evaluation of computing systems and methods — encompassing theoretical developments, practical measurement studies, simulation methodologies, statistical analyses, and performance modeling. Each issue typically contains a mix of guest‑edited thematic content and regular contributions such as survey articles, position papers, tutorials, tool descriptions, and concise research reports on performance‑related topics. Unlike formal peer‑reviewed journals, PER’s format emphasizes community insights, early research ideas, and methodological expositions that may be developed further for journal or conference publication. The newsletter also includes abstracts related to SIGMETRICS conference workshops and events, bridging the gap between ongoing research activities and formal archival publication. Because published material in PER is not copyrighted, authors can later submit extended versions of work to other venues. PER remains widely read within the performance evaluation community and complements SIGMETRICS’ flagship conference and related symposia by documenting evolving research, tools, and perspectives in the field.
