ACM SIGLASH Newsletter (ASN)
Journal Descriptions
The ACM SIGLASH Newsletter was the principal newsletter of the ACM Special Interest Group on Language Analysis and Studies in the Humanities (SIGLASH) — a group dedicated to exploring the connections between computer science, language analysis, and the humanities. First issued in 1968, the newsletter ran through the late 1970s/early 1980s and served as a communication hub for researchers, practitioners, and educators interested in emerging approaches to natural language processing, linguistics, textual analysis, and computational methods for humanistic inquiry. In its issues, the SIGLASH Newsletter featured reports from SIGLASH activities, technical columns on computational language analysis techniques, book reviews, discussions of conferences like ACL/SIG-related symposia, member announcements, and thoughtful essays on how advancing computational approaches could enhance research and pedagogy in the humanities. Although the newsletter was not peer-reviewed research, it provided a crucial forum for disseminating community insights and building networks among scholars at the intersection of language and computing during a formative era for this interdisciplinary field. Due to its historical publication period, the newsletter helped chart early computational linguistics trends within the ACM community and supported performance and pedagogical dialogues before digital communication infrastructure became widespread. Library holdings note multiple volumes and indicate that the newsletter was published under ACM’s auspices in New York.
