Journal Descriptions

ACM SIGDOC Asterisk Journal of Computer Documentation was a specialized serial publication produced by the Association for Computing Machinery’s Special Interest Group on Design of Communication (SIGDOC), an organization dedicated to advancing knowledge and practice in the design of communication and technical documentation. The publication’s origins trace back to 1975, when it was launched under the Asterisk title, serving as a key forum for SIGDOC members and professional communicators to share insights on documenting complex technical systems, software, and computing products. Over its lifespan, Asterisk — later also titled ACM SIGDOC Asterisk Journal of Computer Documentation — became a respected outlet for both practical case studies and conceptual discussions on how documentation could support users effectively in interacting with software, hardware, and information systems. The journal was published quarterly, bringing together contributions from researchers, practitioners, educators, and usability professionals. Typical content included technical articles on documentation methodology, design strategies for user assistance and help systems, usability evaluations of documentation artifacts, and the application of information design principles to complex content. As computing systems became more sophisticated, the journal played a role in shaping professional discourse around documentation practices, user-centered communication, and design considerations that help users interpret technical content with clarity. While the publication ceased in 1999, archived issues remain valuable historical records of evolving trends in technical communication and documentation design — connecting the needs of early computing users with modern usability and design practices.
