ACM SIGCSIM Installation Management Review (ASIMR)

Installation Management Review was a quarterly publication produced by the ACM Special Interest Group on Computer Systems Installation Management (SIGCSIM). Launched in 1969, it served as a forum for sharing experiences, insights, and practical knowledge among computing professionals involved in installing and managing large-scale computer systems — a critical area in the early decades of computing when hardware and software deployments were complex, resource-intensive tasks. Unlike peer-reviewed academic journals, Installation Management Review combined technical articles, reviews, community news, installation case studies, procedural recommendations, and reports from SIGCSIM meetings. It addressed both technical and organizational topics — such as installation methodologies, system performance trade-offs, resource allocation strategies, personnel coordination, and emerging best practices in the installation life cycle. The annual symposia and meetings of SIGCSIM often informed content for the Review’s issues. The publication spanned more than a decade, with issues appearing through the 1970s — its archive showing volumes up to Volume 6 Issue 4 in December 1977. As computing practices matured and the ACM Digital Library expanded, the need for this specialized bulletin diminished, and the serial eventually ceased. Archived issues provide historical insights into installation challenges of early computing environments and the professional community that supported them.
